O Abu Hasan, my praise, whenever you seek it,

is cheap; but if you turn away from it, it is dear.

Do not invite my censure by keeping me waiting, for I

care nothing for one who cares nothing for censure.

I have sworn: if you scorn my forbearance, they will surely snap

every tether to reach you—the rhymes of poetry.

The wronged man is blameless if he spends the night preparing

foul words in answer to your foul deeds.

How many a band before you has dishonored poetry,

and its despisers met with the abasement of their whiskers.

Does the sea of bounty surge for me with its abundance,

while you keep me waiting when delay is out of place?

Awake, humbled, from ignorance's sleep, for it

brings calamity upon those who partake of it.

Turn aside from the path you are on, for it has become

a path of error—your course in dealing with me.

By my life, you have opposed, in my case, a man of sound judgment,

who has ample scope in judgment's narrow straits:

    وما زلتَ مذؤوماً ذَميمَ فَعالِ

    a generous man who favored giving, yet you did not see what he sees;

and you have always remained reviled, vile in conduct.

So tell me, having opposed the peerless man of his age:

does your judgment rise above his judgments?

So thinks the man whose hour of falling has come,

and whose good fortune has given notice of its passing.

You rose to heights you were never worthy of,

and after that rise you deserve to sink low.

If a secretary will not obey the judgment of a master

whose way is best, what model will he follow?

Is it me you challenge with the fires of fury?

You are utterly weary of life's serenity.

Whenever you face my fierce fits of wrath,

no adversary can pit you against a hell to match.

If you have not donned the garb of gracious conduct

through kindness, then you have worn no garb of beauty.

Are you anything but a curse to one who sees you,

and, when tried, a target for every bowshot?

Do you seek a sixth addition to the infamies in you,

when you already have five shameful traits?

Prostitution, ugliness, stupidity, and a speech impediment,

and ill omen—you have perfected ill omen to the utmost.

And the head you carry is good for nothing,

O Abu Hasan, but slaps to the back of it.

O guest of Banu Abdun, provision yourself well,

and among them, do not fret over thrusting at the privates.

For fornication is not forbidden in their faith,

and hospitality is not lawful in their judgment.

No woman they shelter is safeguarded,

nor is any dirham they hoard freely spent.

I swore, in response to his contempt for me, that he

is encamped with burdens that weigh heavily upon him.

Can the lame and ill-omened uphold a state

that the king of the people regards as majestic?

God refuses to let rocky heights be buttressed and borne

by anything but matching heights and mountains.

If a base man alone suckles at the world,

    that suckling heralds a weaning.
