O Abu al-Saqr, enough for your praisers, when they go

to the utmost in praise, is to say: “O Abu al-Saqr.”

    تدفقتا في المَحتدين وفي الصدر

    You filled my hand with bounty and my heart with affection;

both overflowed in the two sources and within my breast.

You bestowed a gift that, had anyone else bestowed it,

would have made me despair of another until the end of time.

For you gave abundantly, and only

a scant gift makes the hopeful expect another.

Yet you are the man who has always had

a habit of kindness and overflowing bounty.

You grant what, without you, would be beyond reach,

and give the gift that brings security from poverty.

So let the envious not think that a cloud

your two palms have spread overhead will cease its rain,

nor that one day's giving from you precludes tomorrow's,

even if what you gave today is of great worth.

Your bounty is like a torrent: one part of it smooths

the path for another to flow, over level ground and rough.

When a portion of it rubs its breast against the earth,

its channel is smoothed for another surge like the sea.
