أرَصاصٌ كِيانُهُ أم حديدُ

أرَصاصٌ كِيانُهُ أم حديدُ

O Abu al-Qasim, who does not know

O Abu al-Qasim, whose essence is unknown,

whether his substance is lead or iron,

Are you lead or iron in composition?

أنت عندي كماء بئرِك في الصَيْ

أنت عندي كماء بئرِك في الصَيْ

ف ثقيل يعلوك بَرْدٌ شديدُ

ف ثقيل يعلوك بَرْدٌ شديدُ

to me you are like your well’s water in sum-

To me you are like the water of your well in summer,

mer: heavy, with an intense chill upon you.

Heavy, chilled by intense coldness.
