خليليّmy two friends قدindeed علَّلتمانيَyou two have consoled me بالأسىwith consolation
فأنعمتُماand you two have done well لوif أننيthat I أتعلَّلُI find solace
My two friends, you have offered me consolation;
My two friends, you have saddened me with sorrow
and you would have done well, if I could find solace.
You would have done me a favor had I been saddened
أللناسُdo people have? آثاريmy marks وإلاand if not فماthen ... is not الأُسىconsolation
وعيشِكماby the lives of you two إلاexcept ضلالٌdelusion مضلّلُmisleading
Do my scars belong to others? If not, consolation is—
People have my effects, otherwise there would be no sorrow
by your lives—nothing but a misleading delusion.
And your life is nothing but straying misguidance
وماand what راحةُrelief المرزوءِthe afflicted فيin زرءِmisfortune غيرهsomeone other than him
أيحملdoes he carry? عنهon his behalf بعضَsome of ماwhat يتحمَّلُhe bears
And what relief does the afflicted find in another's misfortune?
The comfort of the wretched is not in the misery of others
Does the other shoulder for him some of what he bears?
Does he carry some of what he bears?

Both bearers of calamity's burden are weighed down,
No, the two bearers of the miserable saddlebag are burdened
and one weighed down cannot help another whose back is burdened.
And the one with the heavy load on his back has no helper with a heavy load

تَعزّيكyour taking solace بالمرزوءِin the afflicted حينwhen تأمَّلُyou reflect
And a kind of injustice, hard to discern,
And it is a kind of obscure injustice in its place
is your taking comfort in the afflicted, when you reflect:
You console yourself with the wretch when you contemplate
لأنكbecause you يأسُوكَheals you الذيthat which هوit كَلمُهُhis wound
بلاwithout جُرمٍwrongdoing لوif أنthat جورَكَyour injustice يعدلُis judged fairly
for what heals you is his wound,
Because despair has made you its friend, which is its talk
through no fault of his—if your injustice were judged fairly.
Without crime, if only your tyranny would be just
