My soul hoped you would outstrip the rain in bounty,

But God's decree gave the rain precedence.

So be second to the rain, since it came first,

And do not be outstripped in both races, O peerless one of creation.

And do not be vexed that the rain was given precedence once,

For there is no difference between the leader and his follower.

    وتنهلّ بالجدوى وينهلُّ بالودق

    And you endure for all time, while the rain comes to an end;

You pour down bounty, while it pours down rain.

A smile without a gift, when you are a raincloud,

Brimming with water, whose lightning does not lie?

And live for the kings of men as long as the sun rises,

To stitch what is torn and tear what is stitched,

And soar toward the heights of glory until you attain them,

And seek tidings of the hidden unseen from the depths,

And meet the faces of your friends—and that suffices them—

With that radiant face of yours on your radiant day.
