وعذابُ الهوى غُلامُ غلامِ
My passion was a jest, then turned earnest,
My flirtation turned serious, into passionate love,
and love's torment is a servant's servant.
And the torment of passion became my lad's lad.

To lead me to her, so it led me by the bridle.

If you asked the branch, it would say, without lying to you:
If you asked my rod, it would tell you true -
“From her I borrowed beauty of form.”
I learned the beauty of her stature from her.

She combined a forelock, a figure, and a face,
She assembled a buttock, hips, a face,
and breasts and a melodious voice, all in harmony.
Breasts, a melody, into a composition.

So she is more deserving of description, if description
than the full moon to radiance and perfection.
Spoke truly, than the full moon in its perfection.

While she gives me wine that is not forbidden.

I see, in love's abode—if I do not
I see no joy for me in a quarter of love
win some favor there—no place for me to stay.
If I don't obtain delights from her abode.

In both worlds there is no sadder state

Than a lover kept from realization.

By blaming the blamers before they blame me.
