My gray hair brought Judgment Day upon me,

And wrapped my head in its most disgraceful turban.

So it spoiled relations between me and the beauties,

And estranged the cups of wine from me.

I have been wronged, and there is no just judge

To hear my grievance against gray hair.

And when I saw the arrows of gray hair,

I made hair dye a shield and armor.

And I kept cleverly contriving a scheme

That would restore youth and good looks to me.

Since dyeing my gray hair, I have seen

My affairs straighten after their crookedness.

And the traits of youth returned to me,

All except its recklessness and unruliness.

Your blackness in it is evidence of

Youth, and in it is a sign of youth.

You will regret it if you do not dye your hair,

So make your dye black before regret comes.

And do not reproach me for seeking youth,

For my soul has never ceased to be passionately in love with it.
