رأتْsaw عينيmy eye لمُنْكَرةٍof Munkara قواماa figure
ووجهاًand a face يشبهresembling البدرَthe moon التماماat its fullest
My eye beheld Munkara's figure,
My eyes saw a graceful figure
and a face resembling the full moon.
With a face like the full moon
فلمso did not أبرحْI cease to be صريعfelled by هوىًpassion كأنِّيas though I
شربتُI drank بهbecause of it معتَّقةaged مُداماwine
So I have remained felled by love, as though
I became captive to love, as if
I had drunk aged wine because of it.
I had drunk heady wine
شكاcomplained قلبيmy heart جنايةَthe wrongdoing of طرْفِthe glance of عينيmy eye
وقالand said رأىit saw فأغْرىthen incited بيagainst me غراماpassion
My heart complained of my eye's glance and its wrongdoing,
My heart complained of the tyranny of my eyes
and said, “It saw, then incited passion against me.”
And said they led me to passion
فقلتُso I said وقدalthough already جَنَىhad inflicted شراًharm عليهupon it
ألستَare you not تراهseeing it قدalready هجرit abandoned المناماsleep
I replied, though my glance had harmed my heart,
So I said, though they did him wrong
“Do you not see that it has abandoned sleep?”
Don't you see they've abandoned sleep
فقالthen said الجسمthe body أشكوI complain of ذاthis one وهذاand this one
فإنهماfor the two of them أعارانيthey both lent me سقاماsickness
Then the body said, “I complain of these two,
My body complained of them both
for they have both lent me sickness.”
For they brought me only sickness
فقلتُso I said ثلاثةٌthree كلٌّeach one جَناهُhas brought it on
أقامmay it remain بِكمْwith you all بلاؤكُمُyour affliction وداماand may it endure
I said, “Three of you—each has brought this on:
I said all three have done wrong
may your affliction remain with you and endure!”
Staying awake, persisting in their plight
فطرْفيso my glance ساهرٌwakeful والجسمand the body مُضْنىًwasted by illness
وقلبيand my heart ليسdoes not يبرحُcease to be مُستهاماlove-stricken
So my glance is wakeful, and my body wasted,
My eyes keep vigil, my body weakened
and my heart never ceases to be love-stricken.
My heart remains restless
ومُنكرةٌand Munkara تظنُّshe thinks الحبَّlove لِعْباًa game
وقدthough already قعدَhas sat down الهوىpassion فيهاwithin her وقاماand risen
And Munkara thinks love a game,
While Munkar thinks love a game
though passion has sat down and risen within her.
Though passion sits enthroned within her
أظنُّI reckon اليومَthe day قدalready غابتْهshe was absent during it شهراًa month
وشهراًand a month لاnot أراهاI see her فيهduring it عاماa year
I count a day she spends away as a month,
I think today has been a month
and a month in which I do not see her as a year.
A month not seeing her this year
تحلshe dwells بقريةin the village of النعمانِal-Nu'man عَمْداًdeliberately
تُطيلُshe prolongs بهاthere علىagainst رغميmy will المُقاماthe stay
She dwells deliberately in the village of al-Nu'man,
She lingers in Numan's village
prolonging her stay there against my will.
Staying there just to spite me
رمىmay strike الرحمنُthe Merciful مولاهاher master بموْتٍwith death
وعجَّلand may hasten ليfor me منfrom الوعدthe promise انتقاماretribution
May the Merciful strike her master with death,
May God strike her protector dead
and hasten the promised retribution for me.
And hasten my revenge
لئنeven if نَعُمَتْshe lives at ease لِماsurely not رثَّتْhave frayed حبالٌbonds
لهاhers عنديwith me ولاnor أمستhave become رِماماtattered remnants
Even if she lives at ease, no bonds have frayed—
If she enjoys what she has reaped
her bonds with me—nor have they turned to tatters.
I want no part of her remains
ولكنيbut I أجدِّدُI renew كلَّevery يومٍday
بهاfor her وجداًpassion وشوقاًand longing واهتماماand concern
But every day I renew
Yet still each day I renew
my passion for her, my longing, and my concern.
My longing, my yearning, my care
بقلبيin my heart جمرةٌan ember للشوقِof longing تُذكىis kindled
تزيدُit grows علىwith تباعُدِهاher growing distance اضطراماin fiery intensity
In my heart an ember of longing is kindled,
In my heart is a fire of desire
burning more fiercely as her distance grows.
Growing in fervor when far from her
تُرَىI wonder الأيامُthe days تُدْنِىbring near بعدَafter بُعْدٍseparation
وتُعطيناand grant us اجتماعاًreunion والتئاماand togetherness
Will the days, I wonder, bring us near after separation,
Time may slowly close the distance
and grant us reunion and togetherness,
And bring us together again
وتَشفِيand heal منof جَوَىthe burning anguish of الأبراحِtorments صبّاًa lovesick man
يكادhe nearly يموتُdies سُقماًof sickness واغتماماand grief
and heal a lovesick man of torment's burning anguish,
Healing with the salve of union
who nearly dies of sickness and grief?
The sickness and grief of separation
فكُفّاso desist, you two بالذيby Him who أبلىhas afflicted وعافىand has healed
عنfrom المشغُولِthe one engrossed بالحُبِّin love المَلاماreproach
So desist, you two, by Him who afflicts and heals,
It's enough what I have endured and recovered
from blaming the one engrossed in love.
No longer bothered by blameful love
تُرانيdo you think me أبدعَthe most original العشاقِof lovers عِشْقاًin love
وأولَand the first هائمٍlovesick soul فيin الحبlove هاماbecame lost in love
Do you think me the most original of lovers in love,
You'd think me the greatest lover
and the first lovesick soul ever to be lost in love?
The first crazed by passion
