More delicious than aged Rasatun wine,

More delightful than exquisite cocktails

And the two wines of Qutrubbul and Kirkin,

And my coffee of Turkish beans and Kirkuk,

رجْرجةٌ من ماءِ لَيْلِ تِشرين

Is a little water from a Tishrin night,

A gurgling from the water of an October night

Like the sheen of a honed Yemeni sword.

باتَ على طودٍ نيافِ العرنين

It spent the night on a mountain with a lofty peak,

The wind blowing upon it with a scant spray,

Breezes caress it with perfumed breath

في شطرِ كوز صُنْعِ طَبٍّ أُفنون

أخضرَ في خُضْرةِ جِرْو اليقطين

In half a jug, the work of a deft, versatile craftsman,

In the bowl a beautifully crafted work of art

Green with the green of a young gourd.

Green in the greenness of October foliage
