May your affairs be perfected and completed,

and your standing exalted and magnified.

O you who adorned yourself with praiseworthy deeds, knowing

that the blameworthy among men are truly blameworthy.

O you who fortified yourself with gifts, certain

that the miser among men is accursed.

O one who towered above the generous in rank—

he is peerless, and whoever emulates him is generous.

O you, whenever I mark my verse with your name,

that marking brings my verse no shame.

Whoever has been a friend and companion to petitioners,

I say: you are an intimate friend to petitioners.

You surpassed men: no striving for greatness like yours

do we see, nor any disposition like your own.

With kindness you conceal it, yet it proclaims itself

always; you conceal it, though Tamim is within it.

    والبشر برقٌ وهو منك مشيمُ

    Kindness is rain, and from you it is hoped for;

cheerfulness is lightning, watched in you for rain.

You made the mother of generosity conceive after her barrenness,

and made the mother of glory bear, though she was barren.

You belittled the greatest bounty you bestowed,

so its exaltation came from us.

Ever humble, though you stand on a height,

ever making yourself small, though you are great.

When men vie in boasting, there is only

silence from you, and acknowledgment from them.

you kept silent, spared the need to speak, though knowledgeable.

Why not, when, whenever we ask, you are generous,

and whenever we make a slip, you are forbearing?

    ومتى شكونا جفوةً فرحيمُ

    When we thank you for your first gift, you give again;

whenever we complain of estrangement, you are merciful.

    ورجاؤنا في غيرك الترجيمُ

    Our hope in you is certainty itself;

our hope in others is guesswork.

    وببابك التعريج والتخييمُ

    We go forth at dawn, passing by the gates of kings;

at your gate we turn aside and pitch our tents.

like pure wine mixed with Tasnim.

They sent your generosity ravaging through your wealth:

the wealth is eaten away, while the hide remains sound.

May God reward you for all-embracing beneficence

against which no reserve of stored wealth was protected.

But how can He reward you for performing good deeds,

when your genuine delight in doing them is longstanding?

How wondrous your case: you are rewarded, while

your bestowal of favors is itself bliss to you.

whereas withholding obstructs the bounty of one deemed miserly.

Reward is lavished for deeds, for what is pleasant in them

and what is painful, if any of them is painful.

And after obligatory praise of you, I say—

with neither idle talk nor sinful speech mingled in it—

    والفرضُ مفترضٌ له التقديمُ

    of speech, some is obligatory and some voluntary;

the obligatory must be given precedence.

and it is finery, and you are Ibrahim.

and our inability and silence deserve the blame.

who abandoned seeking your bounty is unjust and blameworthy.

We never turned away from you; rather, what held us back was

a disposition that guarantees deprivation of our shares.

    إن الحياءَ من الكريم لئيمُ

    The base side of shyness arose and held us back;

indeed, shyness before a generous man is base.

we have claimed our due, and the rightful claimant is a creditor.

a generous man shares with those who hope in him.

bestowed great gifts without calling them great.

ever since he came to be, no destitute man has lacked his bounty.

a kindness deserves to be completed.

Far be it that one nursed at the breasts of sustenance

from you should be seen by people as a weaned child.

Listen to my parable, for I am setting forth

a parable; from you come understanding and explanation.

your hands have abundant growth that never withers.

for varied benefits while you put yours to sleep.

Would you cut off while the soil keeps giving?

the sword of the Shurat, whose watchword is God's judgment?

Glory has wronged you for my sake, though you stand on a height

where honor dwells and never departs.

    فلقد يعزُّ المرءُ وهو مضيمُ

    So accept the oppression of deep-rooted glory;

a man may be honored even while oppressed.

    ولمثلك التذكيرُ لا التعليمُ

    I reminded you of kindness, with no instruction needed;

one like you needs reminding, not instruction.

Uprightness came first, making correction unnecessary.

until you seem al-Gharid's boon companion.

whose praise of you is skillful and unceasing.

May your final day be delayed as long as life can stretch

for a long-lived man, and may your attainments be foremost.
