May you ever grow in grandeur, while praise remains meager,

and may your honor be exalted while riches lie abased.

You have burdened me with what I cannot bear; yet

the generous man's way is to bear burdens, not impose them.

You charged me with what you deserve, and some of it

is a burden heavy upon those who undertake it.

If in praise you seek a man comparable

to you among men, there is no way to find him.

Do you think an equal to you is readily found for praise?

Far from it! In all affairs you have no equal.

By your life, my strength falls short of all you are owed.

Can I fulfill those dues alone, when you are a whole tribe?

    Rather, a festival, a nation, a world—

indeed, whole worlds, and all this is still little.

Such is the kindness of the generous: sufficient provision

always, while most praise of them is merely soothing words.

A little from the lowly fulfills his due,

so that abundance may come from the bountiful.

A miser's hand is a basin for what he gains,

and a generous man's hand a watercourse for what he gains.

Will you listen, so I may speak the words

that quench a thirsty man's burning thirst?

How often I have spoken an address full of sound sense,

with clear exposition when someone talks nonsense.

Faults are plentiful when sought out,

and even many are few when you forgive them.

So make your scrutiny of praise a discerning look

into the unseen gifts you will bestow and grant tomorrow.

For that is worthier of a young man's striving,

and for that he is worthier of being called noble.

Let those who praise you fall short, and do not be

one who is called remiss and miserly.

I would shield you from their saying, 'A scribe

accustomed to accounts, whose concern is collecting.'

Loftier than that is their saying, 'A noble man

accustomed to generosity, whose concern is making things easy.'

    إن التجمّلَ بالرجالِ جميلُ

    Wear your beauty in the face of every ugliness;

for graciousness toward men is beautiful.

What harm can befall a man of exalted worth

if his praise is slight, while he is great?

The pair most fit, matched together, to beget

a remembered beauty is a stumbler and one who lifts him.

And if you reflect, a pair more fitting than those two

to beget glory is an ingrate and a giver.

Is ingratitude forgiven, though it is a grave sin,

while simile and analogy are taken to task?

Why, then, am I reproached for following a saying

that generation after generation besides me has uttered?

The piled-up mass was cited for every accusation against a suspect

as an example; such talk was widespread before me.

Bestow bounty, and lower your eyelids in compassion

toward those with faults; then distinction is your due.

You may indeed find a replacement for every outstanding man

among your praisers, but there is no replacement for you.

How often your generosity has told its restrainer at the outset,

'Far from it! My custom will not change.'

And likewise it tells whoever checks its renewed giving,

'Far from it! My bounty will not be turned aside.'

Your two palms give first gifts and gifts anew,

and the day of your kindness has a morning and an evening.

O you who demand our dues from yourself,

like a creditor, and whose bounty is prompt,

yet sleep, heedless of us, when we delay thanking you,

in a generous man's way: gratitude to him may wait.

O you who, when urged to a generous deed,

    are found with a bank loose and crumbling;

yet when alerted to a weighty affair,

are found with judgment firmly grounded.

My soul's hopes in you are not greedy desires,

but cultivated fields and date palms.

I have briefly summed up your qualities in my description,

and afterward experience must supply the details.

So let petitioners test you, for they,

if they try you, will receive the explanation.

Your conduct will surely show them that it

always guarantees the truth of those who praise you.

    مثلَ الصباحِ عليك منك دليلُ

    May I remain sought after, heading toward you;

like dawn, you yourself are the sign that points to you.

When the people gaze upon you, they hope,

and hope belongs to whoever beholds a noble man.

No hopeful person directs his hopes toward you

    but hope and enrichment meet.

A radiant brow has testified to goodness,

whose due is reverence and veneration.

And a lavish hand has kept its promise,

whose due is generous favor and kisses.

One hopes in others when playfully savoring wishes,

but true reliance clearly rests upon you.

May reliance upon you ever be vindicated,

and wailing fall upon your enemies and enviers.
