My right is not to be neglected among the forgetful

but I have advanced my cause with confidence
So inform and test me – you will find me, when informed
of my own, attended by freedom from shame.
Firmer than the sword in necks and calvaries
فاخبرْso examine وجرّبْand test تجدْنيyou will find me حينwhen تخبرنيyou examine me
أمْضىkeener منthan السيفthe sword فيthrough الأعناقnecks والقُللِand heads
So examine and test me: when you examine me, you will find me
And task me with dangerous matters in any incident
keener than a sword through necks and heads.
From which the wild beasts and lions recoil in dread
وارمِand hurl المهماتِformidable tasks بيusing me فيin كلِّevery حادثةٍcalamity
ترتاعُbecome terrified منهاby it أسودُlions of الغابِthe forest والأسلِand the spears
Hurl me against the great tasks in every calamity
You will find in me proven, expert sufficiencies
that frightens lions of the forest and of the spear.
More healing than icy snows to festering wounds
تجدْyou will find لديَّwith me كفاياتٍabilities مجرّبةًproven
أشفىmore healing منthan الباردِcold water المثلوجِice-chilled للغُللِfor thirst
You will find in me proven abilities,
Do not reject me, for I am not rejectable
more soothing to thirst than ice-chilled water.
Nor disgrace me, for I am not disgraced
لاdo not تطَّرحنيdiscard me فإنيfor I غيرnot مطَّرحٍdisposable
ولاand do not تُذِلْنيabase me فإنيfor I العِلقُthe treasure لمnot يُذلِwas abased
Do not discard me, for I am not disposable;
Take me as equipment for the blows of fate
do not abase me, for I am the treasure never abased.
Dreaded, and for the shifting present's transports
خذنيtake me عتاداًas equipment لماfor what فيin الدهرِtime منof نُوَبٍvicissitudes
محذورةfeared ولماand for what فيin الحالcircumstances منof نُقلِchanges
Take me as equipment against the vicissitudes of time
I hope for respite for you, joined together
that are feared, and against changes in circumstances.
For the duration of life unto its respites
هذاthis علىon أننيthe understanding that I أرجوhope لكمfor you مُهلاًrespites
موصولةًjoined مدةthroughout the duration of الدنياthe world إلىto مُهَلِrespites
This, though I hope for you respites
And that is your right! For God has favored you
joined to respites throughout the world's duration.
Above the first nourishment of infants
وحقُّكمand your due ذاكthat إنfor اللَّهGod فضّلكُمfavored you
تفضيلهُas He favors الضحوةَmorning brightness الأولىearly علىover الطّفلِdusk
That is your due, for God has favored you
May God bless you in resolve and bounty
as He favors early morning's brightness over dusk.
Purer than water, nay more brilliant than flame
براكمfashioned you اللهGod منfrom حزمٍresolve ومنand from كرمٍgenerosity
أزكىpurer منthan الماءِwater بلrather أذكىmore blazing منthan الشُعلِflames
God fashioned you from resolve and generosity,
You have no need for praise that adorns you
purer than water—indeed, more blazing than flames.
By God, O adornment of days in gatherings!
وماand not افتقرتمhave you needed إلىfor مدحٍpraise يزينكُمadorns you
تاللهby God ياO زينةَadornment of الأيامِthe days فيin الحفلِthe assembly
You have no need of praise to adorn you,
How could that be? Each of you is an extract
by God, O adornment of the days in the assembly!
Of glory, and each of you completely manifests it
وكيفand how ذاكthat ومنكمand from you كلُّevery مقتبسٍborrower
منof السناءِradiance وعنكمand from you كلُّevery ممتثلِfollower
How could that be, when from you comes every borrower
You are self-sufficient, without any eulogizing
of radiance, and from you every follower takes his model?
Like the self-sufficiency of gazelles from kohl
تَغنونَyou have no need عنof كلِّany تقريظٍeulogy بفضلكُمُthrough your excellence
غنىas the independence of الظباءgazelles عنfrom التكحيلapplying kohl بالكَحَلِthrough natural eye-darkness
Your excellence frees you from all need of eulogy,
Your state gleams in the days' succession
as gazelles need no applied kohl, being naturally dark-eyed.
As if it is the nation of Islam among nations
تلوحُshines فيamid دولةِthe turns of الأيامِthe days دولتُكمِyour reign
كأنهاas though it were مِلَّةُthe religion of الإسلامIslam فيamong المللِreligions
Your reign shines amid the changing reigns of time
For all of you are God's saintly allies
as though it were Islam among the faiths.
Whose abode is Paradise, without change
فأنتمُfor you أولياءُfriends of اللَّهGod كُلُّكُمُall of you
فيin جنةthe garden of الخلدeternity سُكناهمtheir dwelling بلاwithout حولِchange
For you are all God's friends,
Never will your state have a terminal era
whose dwelling is in the Garden of Eternity, without change.
No - by my life! Nor a timed conclusion
ماnot إنindeed لدولتكمfor your reign إبّانُa season of مُنقرضٍone passing away
كلاno لعمريby my life ولاnor ميقاتُan appointed time of مرتحلِone departing
Your reign has no season of extinction,
May God protect your blossom from Mars
no, by my life, nor an appointed time for departure.
And your Jupiter – for He protected it from Saturn

God has saved your Venus from Mars,
It has not fallen short, not at all, nor been deficient
and your Jupiter He has saved from Saturn.
Of the rank of seven, among its long-lived peers

Accept it: it has not failed—no, nor fallen short
Give the greeting of a hoped-for safekeeping
of the rank of the Seven among its long peers.
Which, when they see, will be sweet as a kiss to the hopeful
واسلمْand remain safe سلامَةَwith the safety of مأمولٍone hoped for فواضلهُhis bounties

And live in safety, as one whose bounties are hoped for,
who, when seen, is like a prayer-direction to the children of hope.
