May you be watered, O abodes of love,

In the valley of al-Shurayja, by showers of rain.

And may the grazing ground of your gazelles never cease

To be lush, in its home grounds and distant reaches.

And may the gardens—where the beauties

Subdue reason with the eyes of oryxes—

Be bordered by haunts of dark-eyed maidens of the curtained chambers,

Who make the eyes of those who have loved weep,

Like the weeping of doves in a thicket,

Answering one another as the morning smiles.

When they go forth at morning, slender of waist,

Light of bosom, heavy of step,

With delicate front teeth and sweet saliva,

Timid of heart, frail of strength,

    Visiting every Friday

Graves established in the abode of decay.

And they return, tugging their hips along,

    Playful among women like figurines,

As though the swaying of their sides

Were the swaying of boughs in the east wind.

How many are mine beneath your branches' shade—

Despite the distance—haunts of youthful days,

And, after estrangement, bonds of union,

    And, after separation, meeting places,

And days of care in which we took delight

With our loved ones—good and pleasing days.

So in Wasit I was given, in your stead,

    The dwellings of Nabataeans, village folk;

And in place of Surra Man Ra and its gardens,

    Latrines facing one another in the open;

And in place of its inhabitants' fair faces,

Monkeys straining beneath the ghada shrubs—

Men in Kaskar: you will never see

    Their like among all humankind.

Thin of body, light of intellect,

Small of head, huge of beard.

So may Wasit never be hallowed as a town,

Nor may abundant rain from any cloud water it.
