May rain bless a life gone by, with nothing to mar it—

    days when dark-pupilled eyes with gleaming whites ruled over us;

when union was joined to time's own continuity,

its cord firmly twined, and estrangement itself forsaken.

We passed our evenings and mornings with no talebearer hovering around us,

nor any dreaded watcher with furtive glances.

And our company was united, and the house gathered

us together; the abode of love and merriment was full of life,

until time's vicissitudes struck us, taking deliberate aim,

with separation, when the decrees of fate betrayed us.

And tears took for companion an eye that would not cease weeping,

when the caravan set out in the morning with the neighbors' camel-litters.

Do not condemn my anguish, O my two companions, over

what is gone; and a lovesick man, if maddened by love, is excused.

And console me, you two, for patience is beyond reach,

and grief presses close, and tears stream down.

For nothing dispels the sorrow in the heart

except cups that bring languor to the body,

or the singing of a skilled songstress, who sang in rapture

a song in which the bass and treble strings conversed in a foreign tongue.

O dwelling, deserted at Awtas and altered

after its dweller departed, by the rains and windblown dust.
