Lo, she came early, ablaze with burning reproach.

And wretched is early reproach as a man's morning draught.

She threatens me with gray hair, saying it has already overshadowed me.

Yet she has reminded me only of what I already remembered.

So I said to her—for a man guards and defends

his watering place, so long as speech has an outlet—

Lo, now that only a remnant of my youth remains,

I forestall my gray hair with pleasures, and hasten ahead.

She forbade me, and only deepened my devotion to youth.

Lo, sometimes a fool forbids, and thereby commands.
