    Listen, O thankful one,

and you who are lavish in praise:

If Abu Isa has shown [favor]

to those worthy of pardon and gifts,

then look to the best source of hope

to bear the burden of crushing weight.

    فحاشاهُ مِن النَّزْحِـ

    And draw from him on alternate days and at will;

for far be it from him to run dry,

or for the water-drawer to return

from him with his drawing fruitless.

A noble man whom God has kept

    from disparagement and ugliness.

    In praising him, we swim,

    a long way—what a swim!

Verse has grown free-flowing for us

in praise of the generous master.

It comes easily in his praise,

    without toil or strain.

But for him, it would not submit,

    nor soften beneath a caress.

May God favor the father who begot

    him, with victory and conquest,

and never deprive him of a life

like the shade of lote and acacia trees,

    for the fractures he mends

    and the wounds he heals.

For through him the realm has become

    guarded, its grazing herds secure.

    A minister sincere at heart,

    pure of breast and flank.

    Forbearing, weighty in forbearance,

fiercely protective, unfailing in his thrust.

    His two states, anger

    and contentment, are above jest.

So he is not kindled by blowing,

    nor quenched by sprinkling.

And how much suppleness there is in a sword,

and how much slaughter in a sword!

So tell, you two, the man who has become

a bearer of firewood and a striker of sparks:

    Petty faults, which are met

by the truthful minister with pardon.

Ah, how insignificant to the full moon

is a dog that persists in barking!

    Let the ignorant not pass

    from running to running wild,

lest those who go too far encounter

a bridle unfailing in its restraint.

Fire warns others away from itself

through the scorching heat it contains.

Let no deluded soul feel secure

against the flood because of a trickle.

Go in the morning, O archer of the night,

to the one you target—or come in full daylight.

Do not take forbearance for weakness,

lest you bring deserved rebuke upon yourself.

    Beware of forbearance: for forbearance

has power to heal and power to wound.

And at times its anchors lie firm,

and at times mills turn for it.

There is no mercy at the millstone

when it turns upon the wheat.

Ṣāʿid has become the ascending one,

rising beyond the farthest reach of sight.

He is the mountain that has become

    the people's resource against hardship.

So one shelters in a cave of his,

and another tends a flock upon his slope.

    So easy, you who scheme

against that mountain by headbutting it:

for the head of one who butts smooth rock

is likelier than the rock to be crushed.
