Let whoever contests with me be certain that I

shall overshadow what he has built with a lofty edifice.

nor one who deems me weak but a fool.

Young man of the scribes, do not encroach upon my verse,

lest you wrong a companion, a friend, an ally.

And speak of a companion who has only been found

wise in his ways and refined,

astute in his aims and cultivated,

discerning in his speech and sound in judgment,

above reproach in his pursuits and distinguished,

scrupulous in his earnings and unstained,

noble in his lineage and of ancient stock,

light in his play and nimble.

Like the owner of the ninety-nine, he began

contending with the weak owner of a single one.

I suppose you perceive his aggression,

and are content that blame should be his companion.

    فقل سدداً وأنجد مستضيفا

    Yet you are the adversary and the judge called upon;

so speak rightly, and aid one seeking hospitality.

Be just in your treatment of me, and be moderate,

and do not be fierce in warring against me.

you accept; I was not created insignificant.

So take my obedience and my sincere affection:

I have given you the maidservant and the servant boy.

with hideous examples of exemplary punishment

that travel forth and pierce the encircling horizon.
