It is not forbidden to revile one unable to compose verse,

for a poet whom an oppressor has subjected to injustice.

My rival’s weakness, if he confronts my strength,

will not save him from me until cries of mourning ring out.

In God is a sufficient protector, if plots are contrived,

    and statements are slipped in, and malicious tales spread;

and a faithful watcher: a wrongdoer is never free

of His punishments until he desists in remorse.

And why were hands and tongues created for people,

if what is inviolable is not defended by them?

If thick-necked lions are given their weapons—

and say “powers” if someone seeks to wrong you—

and injustice overtakes them, yet they take no vengeance for it,

then those fierce lions have shown God no gratitude.

Surely weakness and want are less harmful

than strength bestowed on me while an oppressor still wrongs me despite it.
