Is the prince content—may God prolong
Does the prince wish to prolong his rule,
the prince’s life, mighty and obeyed—
With the prince’s power lasting long and obeyed,

فأحذاه بعد المضاء انقطاعا
that his withholding has blunted my tongue
That I lost my sayings about him,
and bestowed dullness on it after its keenness?
And he took them after decree as disconnected?

And my verses in his praise once numbered
My rhymes in praising him

And it was but a keen sword left neglected,
It was nothing but a sword I wasted,
and whatever matter is neglected goes to waste.
And no matter how much I wasted, it was a waste.

for a day when men veil themselves
For a day when men are content
and women cast off their veils.
And women regretful in their veils.
