إنيindeed I سألتُI asked ابنson of أبيAbī (father of) طاهرٍṬāhir
لِمْwhy تنبحyou bark at البدرَthe full moon إذاwhen ماemphatic particle بَهَرْshines brilliantly
Indeed, I asked Ibn Abī Ṭāhir,
I asked the son of Abu Tahir,
“Why do you bark at the full moon when it shines so brightly?”
Why do you bark at the moon when it shines bright?
فقالso he said ليto me أحسدُهُI envy it حُسنَهُits beauty
وأنهand that it is عالٍlofty يفوقsurpasses البشرhumankind
He said to me, “I envy it its beauty,
He said, I envy its beauty,
and how lofty it is, surpassing humankind.”
And that it is high above all mankind.
قلتُI said فإنfor indeed الشمسَthe sun قدindeed أُوتيتْhas been granted
هذاthis وماand not تنبحyou bark at غيرَother than القمرthe moon
I said, “But the sun has indeed been granted
I said, But the sun is given this,
this, yet you bark at nothing but the moon.”
And it does not bark except at the moon.
فقالso he said يُعشيdazzles بصريmy sight ضوؤهاits light
وليسand is not ضوءُlight of البدرthe full moon يُعشيdazzling البصرthe sight
He said, “Its light dazzles my sight,
He said, Its light blinds my sight,
but the full moon’s light does not dazzle the sight.”
Yet the moon's light does not blind the eyes.
