ولاnor تهابُfears أخاone possessed of عزٍّmight ولاnor حَشَدِa gathered host
Indeed, death spares no one,
Death spares no one,
Nor fears one possessed of might or a gathered host.
It fears not a dear brother nor crowds.

It came to this prince while he stood within a shelter
This prince, it came to him while he was protected
Dark as night, with all the arms or numbers you could wish,
Like the night - choose whatever number you wish.

Of men, each savoring death, whose constant practice
For all who seek refuge from death, it is their abode
Is despoiling armored warriors and wearing helmets and mail.
The mail coat, the white garments and the necklaces are futile.

His battle-gear is accustomed to hunting heroes;
It is accustomed to hunting heroes in their forts
He sees lance-combat on the morning of terror as a hunt.
It sees the fleeing in the morn as prey.

As though he were a lion: nothing turns his resolve aside
It is as if it is the lion whose determination
Except his own resolve, or a draught of extinction.
None can bend except its own determination or a dose of poison.

And Death had ever obeyed his hands; he directed her
And it did not cease being obedient to his hands
Among mankind, and she defied him over no one,
As he directed it among people and none disobeyed him.

Until death's messenger came to inform him
Until the messenger of death came to notify him
That permanence belongs to the Face of the One, the Self-Sufficient.
That remaining is for the One, the Eternal.

By God, what a man is lost! Death brought him
To God belongs all that perishes, and the bath fulfilled its duty,
To life's furthest reach and glory's, in one span.
The last of life and the last of glory in its appointed time.

How many an eye, after him, is tearful and sleepless,
How many tearful eyes have since cried for him -
As though lined with poison for kohl while already inflamed.
As if kohl was applied upon inflamed eyes.

It wept so freely for him that none needed to tell it:
They overflowed with tears for him so I need not tell them:
"O eye, give generously of your tears in an unbroken stream."
"My eyes, be generous with flowing tears!"

If battle's claw was not his doom,
If triumph does not immortalize the excitement of valor,
For the noblest plants wither without being reaped.
Then the best of plants will wither though unharvested.

Do you not see that the finest planted trees do not wither
Do you not see choice saplings only wither
Except upon their own trunks, throughout all time?
On their trunks throughout all time?

Some men are ennobled by a death by the sword;
There are those who take pride in the death of swords -
They are not at the farthest limits of glory.
They are not of glory in its furthest goals.

Honor in life and honor in death, whenever they unite,
The honor of life and honor of death never combined
Are more radiant, and build honor's pillared house more firmly.
More harmoniously, more constructively than in this house with pillars.
مَوْتُdeath السَّلامةfreedom from violence للإنسانfor mankind نَعْلَمُهُwe know it

A peaceful death, we know, belongs to man;
We know the death of peace for man
The hideous slaughter is for the lion alone.
While murderous, atrocious killing is for the lion.
لمdid not يُعْمِلwield السَّيْفَthe sword ظُلماًunjustly فيagainst ضَرائبهthose he struck

He never wielded the sword unjustly against those he struck,
The sword did not tyrannize in its taxes
So no avenger's sword was loosed upon him.
So the sword of requital was not drawn against it.
لاmay you not تَبْعَدَنَّever be far away أباAbu; father of العباسal-Abbas منwhat a مَلِكٍking

وإنْand even though نأيْتَyou went far away وإنand even though أصْبحتَyou have become فيin البَعَدِremoteness
May you never be far, Abu al-Abbas—what a king!—
Do not distance Abu Al-'Abbas from a kingdom
Though you have gone afar, though you now dwell in remoteness.
Even if you become distant and remote.

When you drank there, you left the pool of death
You left the basin of demise after drinking from it
Sweet to the taste, like honey dissolved in hailwater.
The sweetest taste - though poisoned by ice.

And surely the remnant of a cup you have left behind
The surplus of a cup which you graced
Brings coolness indeed to the entrails and the liver.
Is a sweet coldness in the intestines and liver.
ماnot متَّyou died بلrather ماتdied أهلُthe people of الأرْضthe earth كلُّهمُall of them
إذwhen بنتَyou parted منْهمfrom them وكنتand you were الروحthe spirit فيin الجسدِthe body
You did not die; rather, all the people of earth died
None died, but the people of earth died entirely
When you parted from them—you were the spirit in the body.
When you were made from them and were spirit in flesh.

So you, though now within a grave, have the greater right
So you are most deserving even if interred
To receive condolences for the people of rough and level ground.
To be consoled with heirs of moths and worms.

How many calamities had Time worn threadbare!
How many calamities fate had woven
Through you, people now wear those calamities' new garments.
Whose new clothes the people donned!

Among them is a weeper whose eye comes to his aid,
Some weep with eyes to assist them
And another wrapped in inward grief.
While others are folded into graves.

A tear descends with no end to its flow,
Sorrow in hearts that have no comfort
And a sigh fills the entrails as it rises.
And groans filling breasts and lungs.
سوَّيْتَyou made equal فيin الحُزْنsorrow بينamong العالَمينَall peoples كماjust as

سوَّيْتَyou made equal بينهُمamong them فيin العيشَةlife الرَّغَدِeaseful
You made all people equal in sorrow, just as
You equated the two worlds in mourning
You made them equal in a life of ease.
As you equated them in prosperous life.
بثَثْتَyou spread شَجْوَكَgrief for you فيهمamong them إذwhen فُقدْتَyou were lost كماjust as

You spread grief for you among them when you were lost, just as
You spread your agony among them when you were missed
You spread your bounty among them while still present.
As you spread your bounty without being sought.
عَدْلاtwo acts of fairness حياةٍlife وموْتٍand death منْكfrom you لوif وُزِناthe two were weighed

Your fairness in life and death—if both were weighed,
The justice of a lifetime and death from you - if weighed
One against the other, neither would be less nor more.
This by that - would not decrease nor increase.

You had made them forget to recall sorrow;
You made them forget remembering sadness
Today they forget all thought of patience and fortitude.
Today they forget patience and composure.

You reopened wounds in them that used to be inflicted
You licked their wounds which time had wounded
By Time's vicissitudes, and you would heal them with the best of hands.
So they saddened them with the best care.

I marveled at the earth, whose sides did not quake,
I wonder that the earth did not quake
And at the firmly rooted mountains—how did they not sway?
And the mountains, that their bedrocks did not extend.
عجِبتُI marveled للشمسat the sun لمwas not تُكْسَفْeclipsed لمهْلِكِهِfor his death

I marveled that the sun was not eclipsed at his death,
I wonder that the sun was not eclipsed for its destroyer -
Though he was the radiance without which it would not blaze.
He being the light but for whom it would not glow.
هَلّاwhy did it not وَفَتْkeep faith كوفاءlike the faithfulness of البدرthe full moon فادَّرَعَتْand so don

Why did it not keep faith as the full moon did, and don
Why did the full moons not don
The robe of eclipse, and thus shine upon no land?
The garb of eclipse, thereby not shining on a country?
لاno ظُلْمَwrong لَوْif شَاهَدَتْit had witnessed منof حالthe circumstances of مَصْرَعهhis death

No blame: had it seen, of the circumstances of his death,
No injustice if, witnessing his manner of death,
What the full moon saw, it would not have shone, nor come near to shining.
It had not witnessed what the moon witnessed, it would not have risen or declined.
