When none who hoped in you had a fire-stick fail?

For talk, where I encounter no refusal?

And your kindness is unbroken toward all mankind but me.

Yet turning away does not precede affection.

Yet your only ready payment is delay.

If the fulfillment of your promise is another promise,

Then one of the two promises suffices me.

Suppose you paired one promise to me with another,

To strengthen the cord and tighten the knot:

    وقد يكفي من الزوجين فردُ

    Are the two not enough? Yes, by my life;

Indeed, one of a pair may suffice.

Is it not enough for a man, as a cloud's promise

Of its pouring rain, to have lightning and thunder?

Your bounty, your bounty—or a restful despair!

After the respite I have given, there is no more.

The reward I hoped for from you has been delayed.

I pray you be spared having your bounty arrive

Without bringing cool relief to the heart.

And that happens if you prolong the delay until

The soul feels harm and distress from it.

    Then praise of you will not come readily;

Does one who spoils his kindness receive praise?

I count a gift as kindness when it relieves

The recipient; the truth cannot be denied.

But kindness is not kindness when it arrives

And a free man among his people is enslaved by toil.

Would he consent to have delay for a brother,

A youth whose two parents are nobility and glory?

Distressed that censure might touch him,

Yet steadfast against disparagement, save for that.

Surely what I planted with you is due to bear fruit,

And the time has come to harvest what I sowed there.

So do not bring about an apology by depriving me,

For your bounty is good fortune to the deprived.

No ill luck harms whoever hopes in you,

And how could it, when you are good fortune?

A woman said, 'You have been rash!' I said, 'Gently!'

For the two pillars of his forbearance are Hadn and Raqd.

Did you imagine my folly's winds would carry off

A mountain that cannot be shaken or pulled down?

If reproach wrongs him, he lowers

An eyelid to it; no humiliation has lowered it.

But it is the forbearance of a man of great character,

Whose aim is toward eminence and glory.

    He lowers himself through humility: he is a lowland;

And rises through lordship: he is a highland.

I have offered her to you like a cupbearer among drinking companions,

Adorned among them by face and figure.

She came to you admitting her inadequacy, while

Her eye and cheek reveal her heart's modesty.

Nor did mustered effort fail her in description,

But no mustered effort can encompass your bounty.

You are extolled, yet never given your full due,

    And described, yet never encompassed.
