If you are forcing me to say the very thing

for which you reproached me, then excuse me and speak of me fairly.

I see kindness as a draught that cannot stay clear

when a mote of delay falls into it.

Reflect, Abu Sahl, with a discerning eye,

and do not mix earnestness with jest in this.

Has anything made one willingly forgo the abode whose bliss endures,

except that it is something attained only after a wait?

Or was this world chosen as a wife over that one

for any reason but its speedy fulfillment of the husband's need?

Ah, why do needs race ahead, while my need

is fettered, walking slowly at a leisurely pace?

And oh, if only it walked slowly upon smooth rock!

But it walks zigzagging through the mud.

I have presumed, knowing I have ground for presumption

with you, smooth and yielding, in a stretch of soft sand.

And I have no favor that gives me a claim on you,

save favors you have bestowed upon me, Abu Sahl.

And you count your own bounty as a favor

done you by its recipient—not out of foolishness or ignorance.

You see a favor bestowed by you as a favor

bestowed on you, which you repay; thus your lifetime is spent in giving.

When you give seekers of bounty a first draught, you give them another:

bounty upon bounty, and favor upon favor.

Nor will the water-giver quench the thirsty circling his watering place

unless his watering is a second draught after the first.

May those who come to drink never lack your cheerful readiness

to give them one thirst-quenching bucketful after another.

I have found you a good friend, except to one man,

whose excellence in wit and intellect you attested.

You disgorged honey for him; then, when he found it slow in coming,

you stung him—and stinging the gatherer is the bees' custom.

So be a bee that bestows bounty without harm,

and give, sparing him in this both strict justice and reproach.

And win the permanence of what comes after, for it endures

through all time; and claim alone the precedence of what comes before.
