لئنif indeed كنتُI was فيin حفظيmy remembering لماof what أناI مودعٌentrusted with
منof الخيرِgood والشرِّand evil انتحيتُI assailed علىagainst عرضِيmy honor
If indeed, in remembering what is entrusted to me,
Though my virtues I keep concealed,
of good and evil, I have assailed my own honor,
I am blamed for what I never willed,
فماso not عِبتنيyou reproached me إلاexcept بماfor what ليسis not عائبيdisgracing me
وكمand many an جاهلٍignorant person يُزريcasts reproach علىon خُلُقٍdisposition محضِpure
then you have reproached me only for what does not disgrace me.
Many a fool finds fault in pure nature-
And many an ignorant man disparages a pure disposition.
Hate is but gratitude's twin in man's makeup.
وماand not الحقدُrancor إلاexcept توأمthe twin of الشكرgratitude فيin الفتىa young man
وبعضُand some السجاياdispositions ينتسبنَare related إلىto بعضِothers
Rancor is but the twin of gratitude in a young man,
Where you see hate for one who did evil,
and some dispositions are kin to others.
There you see thanks for kindness recieval.
فحيثُso where ترىyou see حقداًrancor علىagainst ذيone responsible for إساءةٍa wrong
فثمَّthen there ترىyou see شُكراًgratitude علىfor حَسنِgood القرضthe favor
So where you see rancor toward one who has done wrong,
The land gives what seeds you plant in it,
there you see gratitude for a good turn.
Be the soil ever so excellent.
إذاif الأرضthe earth أدّتْreturns ريعthe yield of ماwhat أنتyou زارعsowing
منof البذرseed فيهاin it فهيthen it is ناهيكenough for you منas أرضland
If the earth returns the yield of what you sow
No shame to repay bills with their like,
of seed in it, it is land enough to satisfy you.
But shameful to borrow and not strike.
ولاand no عيبَfault أنthat تُجزَىbe repaid القروضُfavors بمثلهاwith their like
بلrather العيبُthe fault أنthat تَدّانyou incur ديناًa debt فلاthen not تَقْضيyou repay
There is no fault in favors being repaid in kind;
Best is the man whose nature will keep,
rather, the fault is to incur a debt and not repay it.
Giving loans, taking loans in equal reap.

توفِّيكrepays you ماwhat تُسديyou bestow منof القرضfavors بالقرضwith a favor
The best of men's dispositions is one
Save for grudges, deep-rooted in men,
that repays you with a favor for the favor you bestow.
No tie would snap, till time has run its length.

Were it not for grudges lying hidden, there would never be
I pick gentle natures and gather their traits-
an avenger to settle a wrong, even at time's end.
The scum is skimmed when the milk curdles and separates.
أميِّزُI distinguish أخلاقthe traits of الكرامnoble men فأصطفيand choose
كرائمهاtheir finest والزبدand butter يُنْزعis extracted بالمخضِby churning
I distinguish the traits of noble men and choose
I leave base natures to their people,
their finest—and butter is extracted by churning.
However much I this refuse.
وأتركُand I leave أخلاقَthe traits of اللئامbase men لأهلهاto their possessors
وأرفضهاand I reject them مذمومةًas blameworthy أيماutter رفضrejection
And I leave the traits of base men to those who possess them,
My honor I keep safe from disgrace-
and reject them as blameworthy, rejecting them utterly.
When dirtied, honor can't be replaced.

إذاif طيختare sullied الأعراضreputations لمnot تَنقَbecome clean بالرحضby washing
And I protect my honor from defilement, for
I’m righteous to kin, though their envy persists
once reputations are sullied, washing cannot cleanse them.
And their hatred of me never desists.

علىdespite حسدٍenvy فيin جُلِّهمmost of them وعلىand despite بُغضhatred
And I am dutiful toward my relatives, maintaining our ties,
I don’t cut off those of lower degree,
despite envy in most of them, and despite hatred.
Be they clan or stranger, I let them be.

ومنيand from me سَماراًdiluted milk كانbe it أوor غيرهother than it رُضِّيmy milk
I have not cut off my nearest kin, fearing the disgrace of it;
My nature is mild but has behind it
and I supply my milk, diluted or otherwise.
An ignorance whose harshness I credit.
وإنيand indeed I لذوtruly one possessing حلمٍforbearance وجهلٍand rashness وراءهbehind it

فمنso whoever كانis مُختلاًgrazing sweet herbage رضيتُI am content لهfor him حمضيmy salt pasture
And I possess forbearance, with rashness behind it;
Without wildness in a man, his mettle is not proved,
whoever grazes sweet herbage, I am content to offer him my salt pasture.
Without a hothead, his temper is not improved.

Without fierceness in a young man, his edge would be blunted;
and without serrations in the Indian sword, it would not cut through.
