لوif يعلمُknew ابنُson of أبيAbu (father of) سُميَّهSumayya
كمhow many منa شجاعbrave man يتقيهِfears him
If Ibn Abi Sumayya knew
how many a brave man fears him,
لزهاhe would exult وتاهand swagger بقُبْحهin his ugliness
تِيهاًwith a pride يحاقِرُbelittles كلَّevery تيهِpride
he would exult and swagger in his ugliness
with a pride that makes all pride seem small.
كمmany a حاجةٍneed باكرتُهاI pursued it early
بالسعدِwith good fortune والوجهِand the countenance الوجيهِnoble
Many a need I pursued at daybreak
with good fortune and a noble countenance;
فرجعتُso I returned حينwhen رأيتهI saw him
باليأسِwith despair مماof what أرتَجيهِI hope for it
but I returned, when I saw him,
despairing of what I had hoped for.
اللَّهGod يعلمُknows أنّنيthat I
منin respect of كلevery شيءٍthing أجْتَويهِI loathe him
God knows that I
loathe him in every respect.
كلُّall الأنامِhumankind تخافهfear him
خوفَwith the fear of الأصاغِرthe youngest منamong بنيهِhis sons
All humankind fear him
as do the youngest of his sons.
تُغْضيclose الجفونُthe eyelids إذاwhen بداhe appears
منfrom هَوْلthe horror of منظرِهhis appearance الكريهِloathsome
Eyelids close when he appears
from the horror of his loathsome appearance.
قدindeed قُلتُI said إذwhen قَذِيتْwas irritated بهby him
عَيْنيmy eye وأعينُand the eyes of مُبصريهِthose who see him
I said, when the sight of him irritated
my eye and the eyes of those who saw him:
ياoh ليتَif only ليfor me بصحيحتيin place of my sound eye
عوراءةًa blind eye مماon the side that يليهِfaces him
Oh, if only I had, in place of my sound eye,
a blind eye on the side facing him!
