إذاif أنتَyou أزمعتَyou resolved الصنيعةَa kindness مرَّةًonce
فلاthen do not تعتصرْwring out ماءthe water of الصنيعةthe kindness بالمطْلِthrough delay
If ever you resolve to do a kindness,
do not wring your kindness dry through delay.
ولاand do not تخلطِmix الحسنَىa good deed بسوءٍwith harm فإنهfor it
يجشّمُناforces us أنto نخلطَmix الشكرgratitude بالعذلِwith reproach
Do not mingle a good deed with harm, for that
forces us to mingle gratitude with reproach.

وماwhile ... is not مطلبُthe pursuit of الحاجاتneeds عندَكfrom you بالسهلِat all easy

Are you content to bear the byname Sahl—“Easy”—yet be found
far from easy when someone seeks a need from you?

I deem it beneath lovers of noble deeds to have
their promises appear like lightning flashes in drought,

especially after their hair has grayed, and after
the lamps of reason have shown them the course to follow.

علىwith علمِthe awareness of ذيone possessing علمٍknowledge بعلميof my learning وذيand one possessing جَهْلِignorance
Know, Abu Sahl, that I am learned,
with my learning known to learned and ignorant alike,
وأنيand that I أرىdiscern حسنَthe goodness of الأمورِthings وقبحَهاand their ugliness
بألوىwith a stoutly twisted one منamong الآراءjudgments مستحكمfirmly secured الجدْلِin its plaiting
and that I discern what is fair in things and what is foul
with a strong judgment, its strands firmly twisted.
وممّاand among what أرىI judge أنَّthat النوالَbounty إذاwhen أتىit comes
علىwith الكرهِreluctance كانis المنعُwithholding خيراًbetter منthan البذلِgiving
And among my views is that, when bounty comes
reluctantly, withholding is better than giving.
ولِمْand why لاnot وقدwhen indeed ألجأتَyou have driven ملتمِسَthe seeker of الجداbounty
إلىto الطلبbegging المذمومblameworthy والخُلْقand conduct والوَغلِand uninvited intrusion
And why not, when you have driven the seeker of bounty
to shameful begging, bad conduct, and intrusion,
وأعطيتهand you gave him المنزورa pittance بعدafter مطالهputting him off
فخَسَّستَso you lowered the worth منهof him وانتسبتَand you laid claim إلىto الفَضلِgenerosity
and given him a pittance after putting him off,
thus demeaning him while claiming generosity for yourself?
أرىI deem الجزلthe ample gift منamong نيلthe bounty of الرجالِmen هنيؤُهُits pleasant portion
وماand ... is not نائلٌa gift جزلٌample معwith المطلِdelay بالجزلِtruly ample
I count as ample, among men's gifts, the one pleasant to receive;
no ample gift, when delayed, is truly ample.
وهاand here إننيindeed I منfrom بعدهاafter it متمثّلٌquoting a proverb
بوَفْقٍwith a fitting one منamong الأمثالproverbs فيin منطقٍspeech فصلِdecisive
And here I am, after all this, quoting
a fitting proverb in decisive words:
مطلتَyou delayed مطالwith the delay of النخلthe date palm فاثبتْso stand firm ثباتَهُas firmly as it
وأجنِand yield جَناهits fruit أوor فدعْthen abandon نكدَthe vexation of النخْلِthe date palm
You delayed as the date palm does; then be as steadfast as it,
and yield its fruit—or abandon the date palm's vexing ways.
ولاand let not يكُbe ماwhat تُجديهyou give him كالبقلlike greens خِسَّةًin paltriness
وكالنخلand like the date palm تأخيراًin delay فماfor ... is not ذاكthat بالعَدْلjust
Let what you give him not be as paltry as greens,
and as slow as the date palm; that is not just.
