If anyone weeps for youth out of anguish,
Whoever weeps for lost youth out of grief
I do not weep for it out of anguish;
I do not weep for it out of grief
لأنbecause وجهيmy face بقبحthrough the ugliness of صورتهits appearance
ماnot زالceased ليfor me كالمشيبlike gray hair والصَّلعِand baldness
because my face, through the ugliness of its appearance,
For my face in its ugly form
has always been to me like gray hair and baldness.
Remains for me like gray hair and baldness

The youngest I ever was was the oldest
I have never been as old as I am now
I ever was—glory be to the Creator of wonders!
So glory be to the Creator of wonders

وجهيmy face وماthough ... not مُتُّI have died هولthe terror of مطَّلعيmy first sight of the hereafter
Whenever I take up the mirror, I am given a foretaste
When I look in the mirror it asks me
by my face—though I have not died—of the terror of my first sight of the hereafter.
My face, and I have not died, when will I die?

I am infatuated with beautiful, bashful maidens, yet
I am fascinated by beautiful little girls, yet
my face is fit only for a man of piety,
My face is not suitable, except for one devout
