If a man does not show the seeker of his bounty

Either a scowl or good cheer, then despair of him.

For the one whose face shows a scowl

Is a miser who meant to be generous, and so met you frowning.

And such is the state of misers: when they intend

A kindness or bounty, they show scowling faces.

And as for the one who shows you good cheer, he is a man

Who is generous: when he gives to you, he does not give grudgingly.

    إذا سُئلوا لا ينفَسونَ النفائسا

    And it is the way of the generous to brighten their faces;

When asked, they do not begrudge precious things.

And as for the one whose face lies between those two ways of greeting,

That is the one who has shown you a dry refusal.

And he is the one who cast you out of his mind

Out of contempt, never bringing you to mind even as a passing thought.
