عدلتُI turned عنaway from الصّباyouthful folly صَعَريmy head’s proud tilt وَمَيْليand my inclination
عدلتُ عن الصّبا صَعَري وَمَيْلي
وشمَّرَتِand tucked up الخطوبُhardships فضولَthe excess length ذَيْليof my hem
وشمَّرَتِ الخطوبُ فضولَ ذَيْلي
I turned my head’s proud tilt and my inclination away from youthful folly.
And hardships tucked up the excess length of my trailing hem.
وأوضحand made clear ليto me المشيبُgray hair سبيلَa path رشدٍof sound judgment
وأوضح لي المشيبُ سبيلَ رشدٍ
وكنتُand I had been كخابطٍlike one stumbling عَشواءَblindly ليلِat night
وكنتُ كخابطٍ عَشواءَ ليلِ
And gray hair made clear to me the path of sound judgment,
though I had been like one stumbling blindly through the night.
