I truly overlook lapses, though I retain them

in memory, when some of what is said is forgotten.

When I am most stung by the grit of reproach,

I lower my eyelids most for my brothers.

I close my eyelids to wrongdoing, mindful

of the good that may come, and what has already been.

I repay close friends with pardon for their wrongdoing,

when they do wrong, and with kindness for kindness.

I remind my soul of their virtues, two at a time,

when it recalls the people's faults, one at a time.

And that is not because of my forefathers and their glory,

but because I have made justice my balance.
