بررْتُكI treated you kindly بالهجرانِby keeping away لمّاwhen رأيتَنيyou deemed me
علىby حسْبِthe measure of ماwhat تُبديyou show أعُقُّكI wrong you بالوصْلِby maintaining contact
I treated you kindly by keeping away, when you deemed me—
I justified parting from you when I saw
judging by what you show—unkind to you by keeping in touch.
That you respond according to what I express
ولستُand I am not أباليI care كيفhow كانتwere فروعُناour branches
إذاif نحنُwe كناwe are فيin الإخاءbrotherhood علىupon أصلِa root
And I do not care how our branches fare,
And I do not care how our branches were
so long as we are rooted in brotherhood.
As long as we, in brotherhood, share the same root
وإنيand indeed I وإنْand even if لمnot تأتنيyou come to me وحجبتَنيand you shut me out
لأَعتدُّكI surely regard you النصلَthe arrowhead المُبرَّsurpassing علىover النصلِthe arrowhead
And I, though you have not come to me and have shut me out,
Though you do not come to me and hide from me
surely regard you as the arrowhead that surpasses other arrowheads.
I count you as a blade made bare for a blade
نَصرتَyou defended بظهرbehind الغيبthe unseen غيبيme in my absence وحُطتنيand you protected me
وقمتand you stood up بعُذْريfor my defense قاطعاًdeciding conclusively فيهon it بالفصلِwith decisive judgment
You defended me in my absence and protected me,
You supported me, though absent, in my absence and excused me
and upheld my defense, settling it with a decisive judgment.
Standing by my excuse and passing judgement decidedly
فلاso may you never زِلتَyou cease to be مستورَshielded المقاتلِthe vital spots تعتليyou rise high
وتحظىand you gain علىover الخَصْمthe opponent المناضلthe competing archer بالخَصْلِwith victory in archery
So may you ever rise, your vital spots shielded,
So you remain veiled, though fighting, assailing
and gain victory over the rival archer.
And triumphing over the adversary with excellence
