I shall depart, O Asma, from the abode of a people

whose generous man gives favors like one who withholds.

He gives as one parting with his own life,

for fear of rhymes, reluctantly, not willingly.

To a king whose wealth miserliness does not rule,

nor does he evade doing good through pretexts.

A generous man, in whom the joyful impulse of giving stirs

pangs that hasten his choice of benefactions.

From a people who seek no praise for their giving,

    but give from inborn generosity.

Even were they to trade, they would not trifle with commerce,

nor would those sound minds be duped by a deceiver.

I see their glory as the mountains, for these are

God’s constructions, whereas mankind’s glory is like crafted works.
