سأقسمI shall apportion دمعيmy tears إذsince غدرتَyou proved treacherous فدمعةٌso one tear
علىfor مِدَحٍpraise-poems سيَّرتُهاI sent them forth فيكabout you ضُيَّعِwasted
I shall apportion my tears, since you proved treacherous: one tear
I will split my tears when you betray me, one tear
For wasted praise-poems I sent forth about you;
for the praise I bestowed on you now wasted,
وأخرىand another tear علىfor ماwhat فيكin you منof حسنbeauty منظرappearance
غدوتyou have become وقدand already أصحبتَهُyou paired it قبحugliness مسمعwhat is heard
And another for the beauty of your appearance,
another for the beauty of your appearance
Which you have come to pair with ugliness to the ear;
that has turned into an ugliness I now hear,
وأخرىand another tear علىfor رأيa judgment أُصِبتُI was afflicted برشدهthrough its sound guidance
فضلَّthen it went astray وأدَّانيand led me إلىto شرthe worst مطمعobject of hope
And another for a judgment whose wisdom brought me harm;
another for the right opinion I held
Then it strayed and led me to the worst object of hope;
that went astray and led me to ill hopes,
وأخرىand another tear علىfor جدٍّfortune سعيدfavorable يصوننيit protects me
وحسبكand it suffices you أنthat أبكيتyou made weep حراًa free man بأربعwith four tears
And another for the good fortune that protects me;
and another for the blessed striving that protected me—
And it is enough for you that you made a free man weep four tears.
let it suffice that I weep freely with four tears.
