أرىI see الحُرَّthe noble man يجريflows برُّهhis generosity ويدومُand endures
وذوand one possessing اللُّؤمِbaseness يُجرىis made to flow برُّهhis generosity ويقومُand stops
I see the noble man's generosity flow and endure;
I see the free man running with his freedom enduring
but the base man's generosity is made to flow, then stops.
While the wretched man runs with his wretchedness rising
وأنتand you أبَاAbu (father of) العباسal-Abbas بدرٌa full moon مكمّلٌperfected
تحفُّsurround بهaround it وسطَin the midst of السماءِthe sky نجومُstars
And you, Abu al-Abbas, are a perfect full moon,
And you, O Father of Al-Abbas, are a full moon
with stars surrounding it in the midst of the sky.
Adorned around it are the stars in the midst of the sky
وسَطتَyou stood amid القرومَthe chiefs الصّيدَthe proud منfrom آلthe house of مرثدٍMarthad
وماand no مثلهمlike them فيماas far as عَلمتُI know قُرومُchiefs
You stood amid the proud chiefs of the house of Marthad,
You have hunted the prey from the family of Murthad
and, as far as I know, no chiefs are their equals.
None like them have I known, O tribes
فياso, O ليتif only شعريmy knowledge ماwhat الذيthat which حَطَّlowered رتبتيmy standing
لديكَin your eyes فحاجاتيfor my requests إليكto you هُمومُworries
So, if only I knew what has lowered my standing
Oh how I wish I knew why my status has declined
in your eyes—for my requests of you are cares.
With you, though my needs for you are worries
أألحوتُis it the fish? حوتُfish الأرضِthe earth أمor حوتُfish يونسٍJonah
لكyours الخيرُgoodness أمor حوتُfish السماءِthe sky أرومُI seek
Is it the fish—the fish of the earth, or Jonah's fish—
Did I swallow the whale of the earth or the whale of Jonah
may good be yours—or the fish of the sky that I seek?
Goodness belongs to you or did I swallow the whale of the sky, O Rome
أَياO سمكاًa fish بينbetween السّماكينthe two Simak stars عزَّةًin exalted rank
إلىuntil كمhow long يراناsees us اللَّهُGod منكfrom you نَصومُwe fast
O fish, exalted between the two Simak stars,
O you fish between the two fishes, most mighty
how long will God see us fasting from you?
How long, O God, do you see us abstaining from you
رأيتُكَI saw you ذاpossessing شوكٍspines وشوكand spines منof الأذىharm
فتركُكَso leaving you مجدٌglory والتماسُكand seeking you لومُblame
I saw you bristling with spines—spines that hurt;
I saw you with thorns and thorns that harm
so leaving you is glory, and seeking you brings blame.
So leaving you is glory and seeking you is blame
إذاif لمnot تكنyou are إلاexcept ببذلِby spending وجُوهِناour faces (our honor)
فأنتthen you عليناto us بالغلاءِat a high price تقومُyou cost
If you can be had only at the cost of our losing face,
If you were not but for sacrificing our faces
then you cost us dearly.
You would be too expensive for us to afford
