I say, after the reproacher had spoken at length,

and tired of going on about her, then stopped:

Durayra dwells within me in the place where

my life resides; so leave off your repeated reproach.

Love of her flowed through me along the courses of her saliva

and her glances; then, content, it pooled there.

What a neighbor you are, dwelling with the soul,

in its dwellings, safe from being driven away!

How can the heart forget her, when now

every heart she has subdued is captive to her?

And she has been granted two eyes, with Harut within them

and Marut—how cunning with a heart, how enchanting!

Durayra, pearls have nothing to boast of in my eyes

but you; without you, they would not be a source of pride.

Your namer called you by their name, and you exalted them,

and magnified their worth, so they grew grand.

You are their adornment, though they are an adornment

for every beauty with lowered gaze and dark-rimmed eyes of striking black and white.

Jewelry is only a way to remedy a flaw,

completing beauty when beauty falls short.

On a woman fair to behold, jewelry has no

beauty; but on one ugly to behold, it does.

The stars of night shine in the night alone,

and have no light when dawn shines bright.

But when beauty is made complete,

like yours, it needs no artificial embellishment.
