I saw that you neither rewarded me well nor answered

my letter—what, then, was amiss with the world and its order?

By my life, you have indeed taught me how to avoid

repeating the trial, if I have any sense.

You made the image of greed and wealth ugly in my eyes,

and made the image of despair and poverty fair in my eyes.

Now, by my wariness of my hopes after this,

my deed has indeed deceived me—what deceit!

It urged me to touch the stars while seated,

and that is something that will not happen while time lasts.

Set gifts aside: why deem me too lowly for you to give me

a reply, and why cast my worth down to the depths?

Was I of lowly rank? Why did you swerve away

from generosity? Baseness of rank has infected you.

Then why not offer a promise and put off fulfilling it,

and keep me hoping as a courteous schemer would?

But you judged the cutting off of all giving

    right, since thunder heralds rain.

Was that it? Or why not refuse outright,

and make me despair? But you were made of stone,

in hardness and silence—may you remain as I see you!

And that, if you could feel it, would break your back.

And in my curse is a wound with a painful sting,

O Abu Ja‘far, if you could feel the pain of a wound.

O Abu Ja‘far, be patient, for you have always been patient

under blame; may you never lack a blameworthy kind of patience.
