قلتُ إذ قيلَ جَوْهَرِيٌّ طريفٌ
لمnot يكنhe was قطُّever ذلكمthat one (addressing you all) جوهرياa jeweler
لم يكن قطُّ ذلكم جوهريا
I said, when told, “Ṭarīf is a jeweler”:
When they said that Jayhurī was refined
That fellow was never a jeweler.
That was never my nature
إنماonly قيلَit was said جوهريٌّa jeweler لعبدٍof a slave
إنما قيلَ جوهريٌّ لعبدٍ
نكحوهُthey buggered him فلُقِّبَso he was nicknamed الجَوْحَرياal-Jawḥarī (a mocking nickname)
نكحوهُ فلُقِّبَ الجَوْحَريا
It was only a slave they called “jeweler,”
Rather, ‘Jayhurī’ was said of a slave
Whom they buggered, so he was dubbed al-Jawḥarī.
Whom they married, so he was dubbed ‘al-Jayhurī’
