مدحتُكI praised you أكلأُI keep watch on النَّسريْنthe two Eagle stars ليْليmy night
فماyet not أرعيتَنيyou accorded me عيناًan eye كُلُوَّاwatchful
I praised you, watching the two Eagle stars through my night,
I praised you though night ravens croaked their dirge,
yet you accorded me no watchful eye.
Yet no heed did you pay to my yearning eyes.
هدأتَyou remained calm علىin الإساءةill-treatment بيof me مُصرَّاًpersisting
ونفسيand my soul قدindeed أَبَتrefused عنكconcerning you الهُدُوَّاquiet
You remained calm, persisting in your mistreatment of me,
You persisted in wronging me, hard and stern,
while my soul refused to leave you in peace.
While my soul refused to make peace with you.
أسرَّكَdoes it please you? أنto تكونَbe طليقَthe freedman of حِلميmy forbearance

Does it please you to be the freedman of my forbearance,
You took delight in being free of my dreams,
or would you prefer the alternative—that I repay evil with evil?
Or to repay evil with evil, tit for tat.
هماthey both أمرانtwo courses مكروهانunwelcome فاخترْso choose
طَويقَthe little collar of السهلgentleness واجتنبand avoid الدروّاforceful repulse
Both are unwelcome courses, so choose
Both are hateful choices, so rather take
the little collar of gentleness, and avoid forceful repulse.
The easy way and shun the path of harm.
ولاand do not تتَطاولَنَّact arrogantly عليَّover me إنيfor I
أرُدُّI turn تطاولthe haughtiness of الطاغيthe tyrant لُطُوّاinto groveling
And do not lord it over me, for I
And do not presume to domineer o’er me,
turn the tyrant's haughtiness into groveling.
For I will tame the tyrant's haughty pride.
سفكتَyou shed دمَthe blood of الحياءmodesty فلاso do not تُتابعْpersist
لجَاجاًin obstinacy والتمسْand seek لدمٍfor blood رُقُوّاa staunching
You have shed the blood of modesty; do not persist
You shed the blood of honor, cease pursuing
in obstinacy, and seek to staunch that blood.
Stubbornness, and seek to stanch the bleeding wound.
وَبُؤْand acknowledge بالذنبthe fault والعُتبىand amends وإلاand if not

And admit your fault and make amends; otherwise,
Make amends for sin and blame, else never
it does me no harm if you do not.
Will my censure cease or chorus of reproach.
وكنْand be مُتوقِّعاًexpecting عَوداتِthe recurrences of ذمِّيmy invective
كذاتِlike a woman subject to الحيضmenstruation تنتظرawaiting القُرُوّاthe menstrual periods
And expect my invective to return again and again,
Keep expecting the return of my rebuke
like a woman who menstruates, awaiting her periods.
As women await recurrence of their cycles.
