I love Mihragan, for in it

is joy for kings of splendor,

and a gateway to a season

in which the gates of heaven are opened.

I liken it, as it passes auspiciously

    with summer's passage into winter,

to the hope of those who look to you, when it leads

    them, after hardship, into ease.

So celebrate Mihragan then, beneath life's shades,

stretched out over a life of plenty,

O possessor of blessings perfected without perishing,

though perfection is the brother of extinction.

May God add to them each day,

    so they remain forever growing,

and may God grant you, against your foes,

the aid of fate and divine decree.

I witnessed it: you indeed made merry while chaste,

your faith safeguarded, your gifts freely given.

The singing women sang of you, and sang nothing

but your praise borne in song.

And the finest of what the singer sang of you

is a song he fashioned for you from praise.

You are perfect; I ask nothing for you

that the Sovereign might add to you, save lasting life.

And now, my excuse for failing to appear

at the guarded gate of splendor

is the occurrence of misfortunes, among them a fire

that ate away at the wealth I had amassed.

So I asked for no replacement for it, but

called upon God, earnest in my prayer,

to make it your ransom, if He deemed it

a ransom for you, O you whose ransom is dear.

And before that, I had no

rest in the morning or the evening.

I struggle with an estate that has kept me,

praise be to God, in hardship since long ago.

So let your decision, in kindness, be to pardon me,

for I have no consolation but your pardon.

And do not reproach me—may my family ransom you—

lest you double the affliction I have suffered.
