منfrom صحبةthe company of الأشرارthe wicked والأخيارِand the good
I have tasted flavors, yet none pleased me like relief
I've tasted flavors, but found no pleasure
from the company of the wicked and the good.
In the company of wicked and virtuous folk alike.
أماas for الصديقthe friend فلاso not أُحبI like لقاءهُmeeting him
حذرَfor fear of القِلىaversion وكراهةand dislike of الإعوارthe exposure of faults
As for a friend, I do not like to meet him,
As for a friend, I do not like meeting him,
fearing aversion and disliking the exposure of faults.
Fearing rebuke and loathing his faults.
وأرىand I see العدوّthe enemy قذىa mote in the eye فأكرهso I hate قربهُhis nearness
فهجرتso I forsook هذاthis الخَلقhumankind عنon grounds of إعذارjustification
And I see an enemy as a mote in the eye, so I hate his nearness;
And I see the enemy as an annoyance, so I hate his nearness.
so I forsook these people with good cause.
Thus have I shunned all people for reproaching me.

منfrom عيبهhis faults فيwithin قدرthe span of صدرthe beginning of نهارa day
Show me a friend who does not stagger under a lapse
Show me a friend who is not bowed by a single misstep,
arising from his faults within a morning's span.
Or a blemish that dims the sheen of his day.

Show me one you have kept company with and found
Show me one whom you have known, and found
overlooking even your slightest stumble.
Overlooking your slightest careless act.

Among the injustices of brothers in sincere friendship is their delight
The joy of the sincere, when fates and trials
at disparities in circumstance and rank.
Vary, comes from comparing one state to another.

لمnot يفرحواthey rejoice بتفاضلat disparities in الأعمارlifespans
If brothers in sincere friendship treated one another fairly,
If the sincere were to share alike,
they would not rejoice at unequal lifespans.
They would not rejoice in the differing of ages.

Shall I love people who did not love their Lord
Shall I love a people who love not their Lord,
except for a paradise with Him, and a fire?
Save for a paradise He has, and a hellfire?
