I have spoken a verse; you have in answer to it

I have recited a verse to you, facing you,

a witticism that provokes my anger.

Rarely necessitating my defeat.

فلا تنادر قائلاً عنده

فلا تنادر قائلاً عنده

أخاف أن يحزن معناقي

أخاف أن يحزن معناقي

So do not jest in reply, saying,

So do not mock the speaker of it

“I fear my embracer will be saddened.”

I fear it would sadden my friend.

ضاق خناقي فالتمس قطعة

ضاق خناقي فالتمس قطعة

ولا تكن عوناً لخنّاقي

ولا تكن عوناً لخنّاقي

The noose around my neck has tightened; find me a coin,

My throat feels tight, so I asked for a piece,

and do not aid my strangler.

And do not assist in strangling me.

فما أخو ودي بتلعابة

فما أخو ودي بتلعابة

يلعب بالنار لإحراقي

يلعب بالنار لإحراقي

For my brother in affection is no prankster

What a loving brother playing with fire

who plays with fire to burn me,

To burn me.

يضحي إذا جاددتُه عابثاً

يضحي إذا جاددتُه عابثاً

والجد من خُلقي وأخلاقي

والجد من خُلقي وأخلاقي

who turns frivolous when I deal earnestly with him;

If I jest with him foolishly,

and earnestness is part of my nature and character.

Seriousness is of my manners and morals.

عندك ماء فأجز غصتي

عندك ماء فأجز غصتي

أو لا فإياك وإشراقي

أو لا فإياك وإشراقي

You have water—so ease my choking;

You have water, so relieve my thirst,

otherwise, beware of making me choke.

Or else beware of my outburst.

أمرضني عسري وقد خلتني

أمرضني عسري وقد خلتني

عند مداواتك إفراقي

عند مداواتك إفراقي

My hardship has made me ill, and I had thought

My difficulties made me sick, and you had forsaken me,

my recovery lay in your healing care.
