I have seen you take no delight in the taste of anything

you savor, save the taste of generosity.

And requests for bounty offered to you

are dearer to you than all praise.

So why do I set the body of my verse aright

when I make for your door to seek bounty?

But I meet kindness with kindness,

and no blame rests on one who reciprocates.

Stir your hopes when you are troubled,

    for they are fans.

    Never despair, for the provision

of God comes and goes, morning and evening.
