رأيتُكI have found you لاnot تَلَذُّyou delight لطعمِin the taste of شيءٍanything
تَطعَّمُهُyou savor it سوىexcept طعمِthe taste of العطاءِgiving
I have found that you delight in no taste
I saw you find no sweetness in the taste of a thing
of anything you savor, save the taste of giving.
Unless it be flavored with the taste of bounty.
وماand what أُهديI offer as a gift إليكto you منfrom امتياحيmy asking for gifts
أحبَّdearer إليكto you مِنthan حُسْنthe beauty of الثناءِpraise
And what I offer you by asking for gifts
And whatever joy I gave was dearer to you
is dearer to you than fine praise.
Than the excellence of praise.
فماso why ليfor me عندwhen تحكيكيmy polishing مديحيmy praise
أُجشِّمُI burden خاطريmy mind ثقلthe weight of العناءِtoil
So why, when polishing my praise,
So what is the use of my exhausting myself
do I burden my mind with the weight of toil?
To grind my mind with the millstone of eulogy?
ولكنيbut I أُلقِّيI repay العُرْفَkindness عُرْفاًa kindness
وإنand although كنتyou are الغنيَّwithout need عنof الجزاءِrecompense
Yet I repay kindness with kindness,
But I shall freely cast the handful of lavender,
though you have no need of recompense.
Though you are rich enough without reward.
