قصدتُI came إليكto you لاnot أُدْليI plead بشيءٍwith anything
أرىI consider حَقِّيmy claim عليكupon you بهthrough it عظيماgreat
I came to you, invoking nothing
I sought you out, though I make no request
by which I deem my claim upon you great,
Except what I know is your kindness’ behest
سِوىexcept الكرمgenerosity الذيwhich أعرقْتَyou are deeply rooted فيهin it
وحسبيand enough for me أنthat تكونyou are فتىa young man كريماgenerous
save the generosity in which you are deeply rooted;
Not to gain your praises, though worthy you’d be
and it is enough for me that you are a generous young man.
But so you’d remain the noble youth I see
ولمand did not أمدحكَI praise you إتحافاًas a gift بمدحٍwith praise
كفىsuffices مدحٌpraise غُذيتَyou were nourished بهon it فطيماas a weaned child
Nor did I praise you to make a gift of praise;
I called you those names I know you by
the praise you were nourished on as a weanling suffices.
Hoping to move your heart thereby
ولكنِّيbut I دعوتُكI called you فيin سُؤاليmy petition
بأسماءٍby names دُعيتَyou were called بهاby them قديماlong ago
But in my petition I called you
No reward but the metre nicely wrought
by names you were called long ago.
For the poem is not a debt to be bought
ولمand did not أرI find كُفْءَan equal to سَمْعكَyour hearing منamong كلاميmy words
سوىexcept المَوْزونِmetrical verse وزناًin meter مُستقيماwell-formed
Nor did I find among my words anything worthy of your hearing
Yet I know you see it as duty bound
except verse measured in a sound meter.
One worthy soul knowing another found
ولستُand I do not أرىI regard ثوابَthe reward الشعرpoetry دَيْناًa debt
عليكupon you ولاnor أرىI regard نفْسيmyself غريماa creditor
Nor do I regard the reward for poetry as a debt
If my thoughts you approve and admire
you owe, nor do I regard myself as a creditor.
Your flashing smiles my hopes will fire
ولكنِّيbut I أراكI see you تراهyou regard it حقَّاًa right
لمجدكfor your glory والوسيمُand the beautiful يرىsees الوسيماthe beautiful
But I see that you regard it as a right
If fate keeps us apart and blessings hide
belonging to your glory—and beauty recognizes beauty.
Still I'll think you lack malice inside
فإنْso if تَكُyou are عندin keeping with تأميليmy hope وظَنِّيand my expectation
فكمthen how often صدِّقْتَyou made true بارقكَyour lightning المشيماwatched for rain
So if you meet my hope and expectation,
The rain cloud that passes one land in a sweep
how often you have fulfilled the promise of your lightning, watched for rain!
May drench the next in downpour deep
وإنand if عاقَheld back القضاءُfate نداكyour bounty عنيfrom me
فلستُthen I do not أراكَI deem you فيin مَنْعِيwithholding from me مُليماblameworthy
And if fate keeps your bounty from me,
God willing, strip bare one tract of land
then I do not deem you blameworthy for withholding from me.
While clothing another in blossoms grand

Nor is rain, when it passes over one land
to another, deemed ignoble.

By God's leave, it bares the back of one land
and clothes its sister in abundant blossoms.
