I ask of you what a servant like me asks

of a sovereign like you, descended from kings.

I ask you to pour forth my livelihood upon me

and dispense with my service, to display your generosity.

I have indeed made a most extraordinary request,

so that you may be exceptional in glory; I feared no stinginess from you.

Nor was I unaware then of the unfairness of my demand,

but there I recognized your nobility.

    وإن تمنع فلستُ ألومُ عدلك

    If you do so, you are worthy of it;

and if you withhold it, I do not blame your justice.

And as long as you live, you will never lack

praise of you, traveling along every path.

I swore by Him who brings you back to me,

graciously—He has greater command over the matter—

even if my fear has hidden me from you,

I have certainly not released your rope from my hands.

Nor did I flee with confidence and knowledge

that, if you shot, I would escape your arrows.

But I fled with the certainty

that, in your forbearance, you keep your blade sheathed.

Nor do I disdain to be a servant’s servant

at your side, even if you make harming me your occupation.

But I safeguard my dignity for your sake,

and many a cherished thing of mine concerns you—rather, is yours.

And why should I belittle my own worth,

when I had lodged myself at your abode for two days,

and you had made me distinguished and raised my standing,

and honor had shaped my worth in your likeness?

And it is enough to exalt me and raise my standing

that I once kissed your foot.

So do not be angry with me, nor humiliate me,

and make your conduct match your fine qualities.

And protect a free man to whom you gave gifts,

for your debasement of him has marred your generosity.
