    I adjure you by God concerning my worth and standing

    with you: let neither be open to mockery

    وما الدهاءُ دهاهُ لا ولا اللَّوَثُ

    from a friend who mixed kindness with an offense.

    And cunning did not seize him—no—nor madness;

    but a jest, ugly-faced and scowling—

    the grave befits it better than showing its face.

    O you to whose fellowship one is bound to hasten,

    and for whose affection one must turn aside and linger:

    if, before today, I was gold in your eyes,

    then that pure substance has not been tainted by dross.

    فما لمرَّة ذاك الحبل مُنتكَثُ

    One deft and skilled of hand twisted my cord tight;

    so that cord's firm twist cannot unravel.

    I am he whose character swore long ago

    that no foolishness or obscenity would be spread in his name.

    وما أديميَ مما تَقرضُ العُثُثُ

    And my inviolability under your protection—God has exalted it;

    nor is my hide a thing that moths can gnaw.

    Indeed, the words hung as earrings upon you are brass,

    which the ear disdains when made to wear it.

    I had, in what its claimant reported

    to you, no schemer's spell or incantatory breath.

    لكن كظمتُ وبي من حرّهٍ لَهثُ

    Nor was my silence an admission to him of the report;

    but I held back, panting from its heat.

    And I deemed bluntly contradicting a trusted man

    harsh, even if his words gave cause for concern,

    especially since jesting might have been his purpose,

    nothing else—and earnestness has a field for its seed.

    And I have always been easy in temper and forbearing,

    though I have become a man with a bushy beard.

    ولم يلدنيَ رِبعيٌّ لا شَبَثُ

    My forefathers are Romans: Tufil and Tufalis;

    and neither Rib‘i nor Shabath begot me.

    Nor did I set out to boast over anyone,

    but speech flows when it is stirred.

    My jealous attachment to you compelled my defense—not thirst

    on my part for praising my ancestry, nor hunger.

    So safeguard my place with you, and raise it

    above what brings reproach upon corpse-like souls.

    Let no misfortune ever befall what has been mine,

    for your neighbor is guaranteed protection against misfortune.

    And be gentle with my opponent; restore him despite his disarray.

    May you always, while you live, be one through whom disarray is mended.
