منكَfrom you اللياليthe nights بعلقwith a treasure جدِّvery منفوسِprecious
منكَ الليالي بعلق جدِّ منفوسِ
How grievous to me, Abu Ishaq, that there has been taken
Reassure me, O Abu Ishaq, though the nights without you
From you by the nights a treasure most dearly prized.
Have passed like a painful, piercing arrow.

معطىً من الحظ فضلاً غير مَخْسُوس
A brother—rather, a son, though you called him a brother's son,
A brother you are, nay a son, though I call you brother,
Granted an ample share of fortune, undiminished.
A gift of fate, an excess of bounty untold.

يا لهف نفسيَ أن أضحت مجالسُهُ

وكلها منه خالٍ غيرُ مأنوس
Alas for my soul, that his gathering places have become
Oh how my soul yearns, now that your gatherings
All empty of him, devoid of companionship.
Are empty of you, unfamiliar and untrod.

Alas for my soul, that his garments have become
Oh how my soul yearns, now that your clothes
All bereft of him, left unworn.
Lie vacant, unworn, deprived of you.

له الفضائلُ ذكراً غير مرموس
Indeed, though he lies buried, there has surely been spread
Though laid low, your virtues have unfurled
By his virtues a remembrance of him that lies unburied.
A reputation towering, never to be brought down.

ثم استقل فأمسى غيرَ ملموس
A full moon that descended from its highest station,
A full moon descended from its lofty mansions
Then rose aloft and could no longer be touched.
Only to rise again, untouched, ungraspable.

O grave, do not efface his virtues,
O grave, do not obscure his beauty,
For they come from a house of undimmed light:
For it comes from a house of light, veiled by no veil.

The house of Hadith and the house of jurisprudence—how many a flame
A house of hadith and jurisprudence, how many sparks
Is drawn within it for one seeking God's light!
In it, lit from the Lamps of God's own Light.

Keep noble patience close at hand, Abu Ishaq,
Patience, noble Abu Ishaq, from one who hopes
For life is made only of bliss and misery.
That life is but gifts and kisses.

And Time, like a lion, is a slayer, while we are its
Time is a lurking lion, and we are its prey,
Prey, with not one among us left unslain.
Defenseless save one, the Protected Friend of God.

What we deem strong, we've not known protected,
Nor is any weak man we have seen protected.
What we deem weak, we've not known kept safe.

When it sets out to destroy mankind, you do not see it
When it seeks to destroy mankind, it fears no ruler,
Fear a ruler or show pity to a subject.
Nor spares the mighty or the humble.

While there is joy in one bestowed upon his family,
While happiness dwelt in his blessed household,
That joy turns to anguish over him, snatched away.
Happiness turned to piercing grief in the bereft.

Such is Time, so know it by its nature:
Such is Time; know it by its nature,
We pass our days in its sway, either uprooted or planted.
We are sacrificed; some taken, some remain.

Days and nights decree ruin
Both the prosperous and the wearer of two sackcloth garments into misery.
Upon the blissful and the wretched alike.

How many a Heraclius and Khosrow has suffered loss,
Many a Hercules, Khusrow, Marzban and Nu'man,
And a Marzuban, a Nu'man, and a Qabus,
Qabus and more taste its bitter fruits.

Whether by untimely death, like lions' crushing assault, or by old age
Gone in a moment, like a lion's crushing blow,
That creeps through us, ravaging us as woodworm does.
Or a structure's collapse, rot eats away within.

You have been given a due share of grief and tears for your loss;
You were rightly given your portion of sorrow and weeping,
And fortitude has an undiminished claim.
While forbearance deserves rights, unsullied.

After the shipwreck of afflictions, your spirit
Relief from God is coming, not withheld.
Will come, unconfined, from its Lord.

From the evil of each and every accursed day.

Like arrowheads, from those who glare askance and those who scowl.
Like notched arrows, honed swords unsheathed.
