حلّ رأسي جِيلان روم وزنجُ
Hairs upon the head, white and jet-black;
Gray wisps in my head and dullness,
Two peoples have settled on my head: Romans and Zanj.
My head was invaded by grey and blond,

The raven of youth has flown from my crown,
The crow of youth flew from my brow,
And a shāhmurj, the royal bird, has perched there in its place.
Replaced by the king of checkmate.

ن كما حلّ رقعةً شَطرنجُ
Two colors from it have settled on my crown’s expanse,
In the bowl of my brow its hue did alight,
Just as chess settles upon a board.
As a chessboard square comes to rest.

إنما لي عشرٌ وعشرٌ وبَنْجُ
O gray hair, why have you settled on my head?
O grey hair, why did you nest in my head?
I am only ten, and ten, and five.
I’m but twenty and some, not yet fully matured.
