الخيرُ مَصْنوعٌ بصانِعِهِ

الخيرُ مَصْنوعٌ بصانِعِهِ

فمَتَى صنعْتَ الخيرَ أعقبكا

فمَتَى صنعْتَ الخيرَ أعقبكا

Good is returned to the one who does it;

Good is made by its maker

so whenever you do good, it rewards you.

So when you do good, it will come back to you

والشَّرُّ مفعولٌ بفاعِلِهِ

والشَّرُّ مفعولٌ بفاعِلِهِ

فمتى فعلْتَ الشر أعطبكا

فمتى فعلْتَ الشر أعطبكا

And evil is visited upon the one who commits it;

And evil is done by its doer

so whenever you do evil, it destroys you.

So when you do evil, it will afflict you

تاللَّهِ ما ألهبْتَ مُصْطلِياً

تاللَّهِ ما ألهبْتَ مُصْطلِياً

إلّا لنَحْسٍ فيك ألْهَبكا

إلّا لنَحْسٍ فيك ألْهَبكا

By God, you never set ablaze someone warming by a fire

By Allah, you have not lit a torch

except through ill fortune within you that set you ablaze.

Except for misfortune in yourself you have ignited

فاحْرِصْ على ألّا تُسيءَ عسى

فاحْرِصْ على ألّا تُسيءَ عسى

ألّا يكونَ النَّحْسُ كَوْكبكا

ألّا يكونَ النَّحْسُ كَوْكبكا

So take care not to do wrong, in the hope

So be careful not to do wrong, hopefully

that ill fortune may not be your star.

Misfortune will not be your star

واعْلَمْ بأنَّ اللَّه مُنتقِمٌ

واعْلَمْ بأنَّ اللَّه مُنتقِمٌ

فاجعَلْ تُقاةَ اللهِ مَهْرَبكا

فاجعَلْ تُقاةَ اللهِ مَهْرَبكا

And know that God exacts retribution;

And know that Allah takes revenge

so make fear of God your refuge.

So make fearing Allah your refuge

لا تحسبِنَّ اللَّه مُطَّرحاً

لا تحسبِنَّ اللَّه مُطَّرحاً

مَن بِتَّ تَضْحَكُ منه حين بكى

مَن بِتَّ تَضْحَكُ منه حين بكى

Do not think God will abandon

Do not think Allah forgets

the one you spent the night laughing at while he wept,

Whoever laughed at him when he cried

أو يَسْتَقيدَ له وينْصُرَهُ

أو يَسْتَقيدَ له وينْصُرَهُ

ويصيبَ بالتَكْديرِ مَشْرَبكا

ويصيبَ بالتَكْديرِ مَشْرَبكا

without first exacting redress for him and aiding him,

Or sought help from him and he supported him

and muddying your drink.

And made misfortune his drink

فأنِبْ إليهِ تُصبك رحْمَتُه

فأنِبْ إليهِ تُصبك رحْمَتُه

وارْهَبْ إذا ما اللَّهُ أرهبكا

وارْهَبْ إذا ما اللَّهُ أرهبكا

So turn to Him in repentance; His mercy will reach you.

So repent to Him, and His mercy will come upon you

And fear when God strikes fear into you.

And fear Him if He frightens you

ومتى أقالكَ فاخْشَ سَطْوَتَه

ومتى أقالكَ فاخْشَ سَطْوَتَه

فهْوَ القديرُ إذا تطلَّبَكا

فهْوَ القديرُ إذا تطلَّبَكا

And whenever He pardons you, fear His punishing might;

And when He spares you, fear His power

for He is all-powerful when He seeks you out.

For He is capable when He takes you

لا تُطمِعَنَّك فيه رأفتُهُ

لا تُطمِعَنَّك فيه رأفتُهُ

إنَّ المطامع تنصِبُ الشَّبَكا

إنَّ المطامع تنصِبُ الشَّبَكا

Do not let His compassion tempt you to presume upon Him;

Do not let His kindness make you covetous

indeed, greedy desires set the nets.

Indeed, greed sets up traps
