ذهبَdeparted الذينthose who تَهزُّهُمْstir them مُدَّاحُهُمْtheir panegyrists
هَزَّthe shaking of الكُماةِthe armored warriors عواليَthe tips of المُرّانash-wood spears
Gone are those whom their panegyrists stirred,
As armored warriors shake the tips of ash-wood spears.
كانواthey used to إذاwhen امتُدِحواthey were praised رأوْاthey saw ماwhat فيهمُin them
فالأرْيحِيَّةُfor generosity منهمُamong them بمكانin a prominent place
When praised, they would recognize what was within them,
For generosity was firmly established among them.
والمدحand praise يَقْرعُstrikes قلبَthe heart منone who هُوَhe is أهلُهworthy of it
قرْعَthe striking of المَواعظِadmonitions قلبthe heart ذيone possessing إيمانfaith
And praise strikes the heart of one who deserves it,
As admonitions strike the heart of one with faith.
فدعِso leave اللِّئامthe ignoble فماfor there is no ثوابُreward مديحهِمْpraising them
إلاexcept ثوابُthe reward عبادةِworship of الأوثانthe idols
So leave the ignoble: the reward for praising them
Is nothing but the reward for worshipping idols.
كمmany a قائلone saying ليto me منهمُamong them ومدحْتُهand I praised him
بمدائحwith praises مثلlike الرِّياضِthe gardens حِسانbeautiful
Many a one among them has said to me, when I praised him
With praises as lovely as gardens:
أحسنتَyou did well ويحكwoe to you ليسis not فيَّin me وإنماbut only
أستحسنI find pleasing الحسناتِgood deeds فيin ميزانيmy scales
"Well done—woe to you! Those qualities are not in me; I only
Value good deeds upon my scales."
